Abstract

Used oil and cooking oil are common liquid wastes generated from household activities and tend to increase with the growth of population and motorized vehicles. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a simple incinerator machine using alternative fuels of used oil and used cooking oil in the process of burning waste. The waste used as test material consists of dried teak leaves and used cardboard. The parameters analyzed include maximum combustion temperature, combustion rate, charcoal yield, and ash yield. Each fuel was tested ten times with the same volume and 25 ml incremental addition. The results showed that used oil performed better than cooking oil. The maximum combustion temperature with used oil reached an average of 1060.3 °C for cardboard and 1017.5 °C for teak leaves, while used cooking oil produced 903 °C and 965 °C, respectively. The combustion rate of used oil was also higher at 7.95 kg/hour and 9.62 kg/hour compared to 7 kg/hour and 8.63 kg/hour for used cooking oil. In addition, the ash yield from combustion using used oil was lower, indicating better combustion efficiency. Thus, used oil is more effective as an alternative incinerator fuel than used cooking oil.
